2009 GSAC Men's Tennis Championship Belongs To Huntingdon College

The Huntingdon College tennis team captured its second straight Great South Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship title this afternoon over Maryville College on the campus of Wesleyan College by a score of 5-1.

Doubles action saw a lot of back-and-forth scoring between the teams with second seeded Huntingdon College taking an early 2-1 lead. The No. 1 doubles team of Glenn Rudolph and B. J. Foroughian put the Hawks on the board early with a relatively easy 8-4 victory over the Scots William Alexander and Jimmy Fulton. Sean Jackson and Zack Molin picked up the Hawks second point as their No. 3 doubles team came from a 4-3 deficit to beat Shin Arita and Andrew Hazel by a final score of 8-5. The final doubles match of the championship went to Maryville's Brady Neal and Matt Limone, who traded games with Huntingdon's Kent Hagan and Jonathan Hibbert, finally winning a tiebreaker (7-5) to take the match 9-8.

Huntingdon managed to pick up three straight points in the singles competition and had a lead in two others when the championship was called. No. 6 Zack Molin made quick work of Maryville's Shin Arita, putting Huntingdon up 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Huntingdon's Sean Jackson proved to be the come-back kid once again in his singles match, pulling out the No. 5 singles win after dropping the first set. He defeated Matt Limone 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. The final point of the championship was awarded to the Hawks when Freshman of the Year, Jonathan Hibbert, wrapped up his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Andrew Hazel.

Freshman Sean Jackson was chosen as this year's Most Valuable Player, winning both his singles match and a doubles match with partner Zack Molin.

Top Ranked Maryville To Take on Huntingdon in Men's GSAC Tennis Championship

Top seeded Maryville College will face off against second ranked Huntingdon College in tomorrow's Great South Athletic Conference men's tennis championship. The match will feature the league's Player of the Year (Glen Rudolph) and Freshman of the Year (Jonathan Heeter), both from Huntingdon, as well as every player named to the All-Conference team. Five of Maryville's six singles players were selected to the All-Conference team as were three of Huntingdon's.

Both teams had a relatively easy path to the championship match, winning their semifinal matches 5-0. Maryville took advantage of a short-handed LaGrange team, scoring two of their five points by forfeit. Huntingdon also faced little resistance from a Piedmont team that did not take more that three games in any individual match.

Playing without Glen Rudolph, Huntingdon dropped their only match with Maryville this season, 6-3. Maryville jumped out to an early 2-1 lead following doubles and managed to pull out four of the six singles points despite several highly contested back-and-forth matches that seemingly could have gone either way.

In addition to the tennis being played, All Conference honors were announced at a ceremony held between the women's and men's matches. The following individuals were honored:

#1 Huntingdon To Square Off With #2 Agnes Scott In GSAC Tennis Championship Match

The 2009 Great South Athletic Conference women's tennis championship match will be a replay of the best match of the season as top-seeded Huntingdon will face off with second-ranked Agnes Scott.

Huntingdon advanced to the finals with a 5-1 victory over Spelman in Saturday's first match. The Jaguars surprised the GSAC regular season champs by claiming the #1 doubles point behind the play of sister combo Christina and Amanda McIntosh. Agnes Scott rolled past Maryville 5-0, winning all three doubles points before Danielle Patton and Natalie Mayer cruised to wins at #6 and #4 singles, respectively.

In their only match of the season, the Lady Hawks rallied from an early deficit to capture a 5-4 victory over the Scotties in Montgomery, Ala. Agnes Scott won two of the three available doubles points at the start of the match, but Huntingdon's top four singles players battled their way back to help pick up the team victory.

The feature match of the championship will be between the top-ranked singles players, Esther Kaplan of Agnes Scott and Riley Prescott of Huntingdon, both of whom were named to the All-Conference team for #1 Singles.
