The Huntingdon College tennis team captured its second straight Great South Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship title this afternoon over Maryville College on the campus of Wesleyan College by a score of 5-1.
Doubles action saw a lot of back-and-forth scoring between the teams with second seeded Huntingdon College taking an early 2-1 lead. The No. 1 doubles team of Glenn Rudolph and B. J. Foroughian put the Hawks on the board early with a relatively easy 8-4 victory over the Scots William Alexander and Jimmy Fulton. Sean Jackson and Zack Molin picked up the Hawks second point as their No. 3 doubles team came from a 4-3 deficit to beat Shin Arita and Andrew Hazel by a final score of 8-5. The final doubles match of the championship went to Maryville's Brady Neal and Matt Limone, who traded games with Huntingdon's Kent Hagan and Jonathan Hibbert, finally winning a tiebreaker (7-5) to take the match 9-8.
Huntingdon managed to pick up three straight points in the singles competition and had a lead in two others when the championship was called. No. 6 Zack Molin made quick work of Maryville's Shin Arita, putting Huntingdon up 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Huntingdon's Sean Jackson proved to be the come-back kid once again in his singles match, pulling out the No. 5 singles win after dropping the first set. He defeated Matt Limone 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. The final point of the championship was awarded to the Hawks when Freshman of the Year, Jonathan Hibbert, wrapped up his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Andrew Hazel.
Freshman Sean Jackson was chosen as this year's Most Valuable Player, winning both his singles match and a doubles match with partner Zack Molin.
