GSAC Tennis Championships Open on Saturday Morning

MACON, Ga. – Wesleyan College will serve as host to the 2009 Great South Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26 at the Mathews Athletic Complex.

A two-team race appears to be shaping up on the women’s side of the bracket as top-seeded Huntingdon College and second-seeded Agnes Scott College cruised through regular season GSAC play to claim the tourney’s top two seeds. The Hawks own the No. 1 seed after defeating the Scotties 5-4 in their regular season meeting to clinch an undefeated GSAC season. The loss was Agnes Scott’s only set-back of the season as they enter the championship 11-1 overall. In first round play last weekend, No. 3 Maryville used a 9-0 win over No. 6 Piedmont to advance to the semi-finals while No. 4 Spelman cruised past No. 4 LaGrange 8-1. Eleven of the league’s 12 All-Conference selections will play this weekend including 2009 GSAC Player of the Year Morgan Douglas of Maryville and the GSAC Freshman of the Year Madison Jackson of Huntingdon.

On the men’s side, top-seeded Maryville will face No. 4 LaGrange while No. 2 Huntingdon College faces No. 3 Piedmont in the other side of the bracket. The Scots posted a perfect 3-0 record in conference play this season, sweeping Piedmont and LaGrange while knocking off Huntingdon 6-3 back on April 3. Five of Maryville’s six singles players earned All-GSAC accolades. The second-seeded Hawks will hang their hopes of an upset on GSAC Player of the Year Glen Rudolph and Freshman of the Year Jonathan Hibbert.

Semifinal play begins at 9:00am with women’s play being followed by men’s action. Sunday features a 1:00pm Women’s Championship match with the Men’s Championship match scheduled for 3:30pm. Admission is free and spectators are encouraged to watch championship action.
